How do Hospice Volunteers Support Grieving Families?
At Cherish Hospice, we believe that care always matters, and our volunteers are an essential part of our commitment to treat your family like our own. We offer several dedicated volunteer programs designed to provide emotional, social, and practical support to families navigating the end-of-life journey.
Our volunteers support grieving and caregiving families through the following roles:
- Hospice Respite Care Volunteers: These volunteers provide vital relief by stepping in for two to four hours per session. This allows primary caregivers to rest, run errands, or attend to personal needs with peace of mind, knowing their loved one is in caring hands.
- Hospice Companion Volunteers: By focusing on friendship and socialization, these volunteers alleviate the isolation families may feel. They engage in active listening, reading aloud, or simply being a reassuring presence for the patient.
- Legacy Projects: Volunteers help families preserve cherished moments by creating memory books with photographs and mementos, or by conducting legacy interviews to record a patient’s life stories and wisdom for their loved ones.
- Bereavement Support: Our support continues for up to thirteen months after a loss. Volunteers serve as a bridge of comfort by making follow-up phone calls to check on family members, helping organize memorial events, and providing referrals to grief support groups or counseling services.
- Veteran Outreach: Through the We Honor Veterans program, specialized volunteers conduct pinning ceremonies and veteran-to-veteran visits, providing a unique sense of pride and healing for veteran families.
