Are There Training Requirements for Hospice Visitation Volunteers?
Yes, we provide comprehensive and specialized training for all of our hospice volunteers to ensure you feel confident and prepared. Our goal is to support you so you can focus on making a meaningful difference for our patients and their families.
Training requirements vary depending on your specific role:
- General Hospice Orientation: Every prospective volunteer completes a four to six-hour orientation. We cover our hospice philosophy, safety protocols, communication skills, and patient confidentiality under HIPAA. Training is provided at no cost to you.
- Hospice Respite Care Volunteers: In addition to the general orientation, these volunteers attend a two to four-hour session covering real-life scenarios to prepare them for giving primary caregivers a restorative break.
- Veteran Outreach Volunteers: Volunteers in our We Honor Veterans program complete a two-hour VA benefits module and additional online training to provide culturally attuned support to former service members.
- Legacy Project Volunteers: Those assisting with memory books or legacy interviews attend a one-hour workshop focused on interview techniques and photo organization.
Beyond training, every direct-contact role requires a background check, which we typically process within two weeks. We believe that care always matters, and we are here to guide you through every step of this journey. No prior medical experience is required—only a compassionate heart.
