How Much does Out-of-pocket Hospice Care Cost per Day?
For most families, the out-of-pocket cost for hospice care at home is $0 to $20 per day, which typically only accounts for small copays on certain medications. Because we accept Medicare, Medicaid, and VA benefits, the vast majority of our patients pay little to nothing for their daily care.
The actual daily expenses depend on your insurance coverage and where the care is received:
- Routine Home Care: This is the most common level of care. Under the Medicare Hospice Benefit, there is no daily copay for these services. The daily rate covers skilled nursing, medical equipment (like hospital beds or oxygen), medications for the terminal diagnosis, and aide support.
- Residential Facilities: If you choose to receive hospice in an assisted living facility or nursing home, the hospice services themselves are still covered, but room and board is generally an out-of-pocket expense. These fees typically range from $100 to $300 per day, though Medicaid may cover these costs for eligible residents.
- Inpatient Respite Care: If a patient stays in a facility to give their caregiver a break, there may be a small cost share of approximately $25 per day (5% of the Medicare-approved amount).
