How do Veterans Qualify for Specialized Hospice Programs?

Veterans qualify for specialized hospice programs by meeting specific criteria established by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). The qualification process rests on two primary conditions:

  1. VA Healthcare Enrollment: The veteran must be actively enrolled in the VA health care system.
  2. Medical Certification: A VA physician must certify that the veteran has a terminal illness with a medical prognosis of six months or less to live, assuming the illness follows its natural course.

Eligibility for these benefits is based on medical necessity and enrollment status; it is not dependent on having a service-connected disability.

Once eligibility is confirmed, veterans can access specialized care through the VA Community Care Network. This allows the VA to partner with local, community-based providers like Cherish Hospice when VA-operated facilities are unavailable or specialized care is needed.

Specialized programs, such as the We Honor Veterans initiative, further enhance this care by providing hospice professionals with specific training in:

  • Trauma-informed care to address PTSD and moral injury.
  • Veteran-specific ceremonies, including pinning ceremonies and personal recognition of service.
  • Veteran-to-volunteer companionship, matching patients with volunteers who share a military background.
